Synopsis: Sweeney Todd a.k.a Benjamin Barker returns to London after being sent away by Judge Turpin with the help of a sailor, Anthony Hope. He opens a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett’s Meat Pie Shop were she sells “the worst pies in London.” With the help of Mrs. Lovett, Todd tries to rid of all the people who have ever done him wrong and hopes to be reunited with his daughter, Joanna, who is now Judge Turpin’s ward. As my friend sums it up quite well: “It’s a movie based on a Broadway musical about a demented hairstylist who slices people’s throats with a razor as revenge for prison time and false accusation. Oh, and his victims are made into meat pies. Good, yeah?”
It took me a minute to fully comprehend what was coming out of her mouth, because, well, the last time I’ve seen a demonic barber slit people’s throats as a revengeful mark and bakes them into meat pies, was… NEVER? I’m not sure whether this is one of those “MUST-SEE-OR-DIE” in movie theaters, but it doesn’t seem to be my kind of cup of tea. After all, what should I expect from this movie? A raging singing musical? A sick story of pained man? A jolly way to celebrate the holidays, as said in the trailers?
From the raging recommendations from friends, I presume that I may have to end off the year of 2007 with a bloody way of getting a haircut. Due to my disappointment, I will not be able to wrap up this year with zany Chipmunks, able to bust a better move than the Backstreet Boys.
I’ve been blandished to peer pressure, I’m quite aware. Perhaps I need to broaden my cinematic horizons? A razor-wielding madmen who has an assistant that’s able to scrumptiously bake human flesh, counts?
What’s your thought of Sweeney Todd? What’s the last movie you’ve seen?
